TENCEL™ is actually a brand name for a fiber called lyocell, manufactured by the Lenzing AG company. To reach the name Tencel, the fabric must contain at least 30% of these fibers.

Manufacturing process

Tencel is a sustainable fabric, made from wood cellulose by dissolving wood pulp and using a special drying process called spinning. The raw material used comes from certified and controlled sources. Tencel’s supply chain is transparent. It is made from eucalyptus trees that are grown on sustainably managed farms; no old growth forests, genetic manipulation, irrigation, or pesticides are used. These forests and the pulp produced for Tencel have earned Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification that the products come from socially and environmentally responsible forests. Manufacturing of Tencel requires also less water and energy than for example cotton. As a naturally derived fibre, Tencel is also biodegradable.

TENCEL® fabric has the Oeko Tex 100 certification and it has been awarded the European Community Eco-label flower for products and services with reduced environmental impacts.

Why Tencel?

Tencel is known as very soft and pleasant material and it is very commonly blended with natural fabrics such as cotton, hemp, cotton or wool to enhance the aesthetics, softness and functionality of fabrics. It is resistant to wrinkles,  absorbent, very strong when wet or dry, and drape well.
